Water Safety and Awareness Project

Join us in the Classroom

We teach children Water Safety Awareness in a fun, engaging classroom presentation.

Our Foundation: “Josh the Baby Otter” Book

Parents Blake and Kathy Collingsworth honor the memory of their two-year-old son Joshua, who died on June 4, 2008 after falling into the family pool three days earlier. They believed they had every safety precaution in place, but the reality is that a drowning can occur in mere moments. After losing Joshua, they felt compelled to help reduce the dramatic numbers of deaths by drowning that occur in our country and around the world.

Their goal is to empower children to be safe in and around ALL bodies of water to prevent similar tragedies. The Water Safety and Awareness Project is dedicated to teaching young children about water safety through the use of Josh the Baby Otter a book written by Blake, which has been translated into several languages. Over 300,000 books have been distributed. The program has been presented in classrooms, community centers, zoos, pools, and childcare facilities around the world.

IF we empower children to be safe around water, can we prevent similar tragedies?

YES!

IT’S Our MISSION

Our mission is to educate children and adults worldwide about water safety through the utilization of drowning prevention campaigns & early childhood water safety training.

Our vision is the elimination of drowning through water safety education and awareness by fostering a generational change in the way children and adults perceive bodies of water.

FLOAT LESSONS

Our National Float Center in Nebraska is the epicenter for float methodology in early development. We teach children how to float in case they’re ever in a dangerous situation.

EDUCATION INITIATIVES

We educate young children about the importance of water safety from a young age, the same way they might learn about fire safety or stranger danger.

Children learn:

  • To never go near water without an adult.
  • To first learn to float and/or swim before going in water
  • To always swim with a buddy.

Target audience:

Pre-k to second grade level

Activity Time Length: 20-25 Minutes

Personalize the presentation and add additional water safety activities as you desire. This activity can be held within one classroom or many combined classes. Ask the children sit on the floor with ample area for the song and dance portion of the activity.
